eLITHE pilot-tests three electricity–hydrogen hybrid burner concepts for ceramic kilns

Three concepts of electricity–hydrogen hybrid burners were developed, modelled and validated through pilot-scale testing for ceramic kiln applications, comparing combustion stability, performance and emissions.

Within the European project eLITHE, work continues to accelerate the decarbonisation of high-temperature industrial processes, with a particular focus on the ceramics sector. The aim is to develop a flexible heating concept that combines electricity and hydrogen as alternatives to natural gas, enabling industry to adapt to changing energy availability and price dynamics.

As part of the latest technical activities, partners TNO and RECOM have analysed and further refined several hybrid heating solutions, integrating new concepts developed within eLITHE. The work combines approaches based on flameless oxidation and electric preheating of the combustion air, supporting the definition and assessment of new burner architectures.

To compare the different solutions in a structured way, RECOM carried out extensive advanced modelling to study the behaviour of the designs across multiple operating scenarios. Based on the simulation outcomes, three hybrid burners at pilot scale were manufactured and tested in the laboratory, assessing combustion stability, emissions, and performance while varying fuel blends and the level of electrical input. The tests highlighted clear differences among the concepts, enabling the selection of the most promising candidate for the next phases.

The upcoming phase will focus on scaling up the selected burner towards an industrial-scale demonstration. A second design, particularly attractive for multi-fuel flexibility, will be further investigated through additional simulations under more challenging operating conditions. The results will feed into the planned demonstration activities, including integration and commissioning at IZF’s tunnel kiln test facility.
