Three quarters of Europe’s industrial CO₂ emissions come from burning fossil fuel to make heat — and heat above 1000 °C is the hardest part to electrify. For the ceramic industry, that is not a niche problem: it is most of the energy bill.
eLITHE is a Horizon Europe project developing and testing technologies to electrify high-temperature processes in the ceramic industries — melting, calcination and firing. In this 90-minute session, the project team presents where each of those technologies has reached: an electric smelter for glass frits, microwave calcination of alumina, electrified brick firing, and a hybrid flameless burner running on hydrogen with electrically pre-heated air. Alongside them, work on ceramic waste as high-temperature heat storage, and on the digital tools for process flexibility.
We will also be straightforward about the economics. eLITHE is working on measuring the cost gap between electrified and gas-fired heat at its pilot sites. The session sets out what would change that, and how far the technology has come.
